Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do before my session?
Plan ahead — please arrive 5-10 minutes early for your session. This will give you time to update me on your needs for the day’s session, as well as support you in entering a restful, parasympathetic state.
If it is your first session with me, please arrive 15-20 minutes early to fill out an intake form, orient yourself to the space and ground yourself.
Clean up — please use good hygiene. Arrive having showered and without perfume or fragranced products on your skin.
Communicate — share about your conditions and intentions for your session. I will focus my work to address the specific needs and desires you have.
…during the session?
Communicate — while you will have already shared your goals and needs beforehand, your communication throughout the session is most welcome. You are the one inside your body. As you share with me what you are sensing and needing with as much precision as you can, we can collaborate to create the most effective session for what your body needs.
Be present — as much as possible, set aside distractions for the duration of the session and be completely present for yourself.
Relax — perhaps you’re great at melting like butter on a freshly baked slice of bread. For most of us, it can take some conscious reminders. I will cue you verbally or nonverbally throughout your session if you’re defaulting back to tension patterns. Also see how you can encourage your own body, part by part, to let go of any tension that is unnecessary. Releasing excess tension is what we’re after.
…and afterwards?
Rinse — stay hydrated to keep your cells and all your body systems functioning optimally. I will be happy to serve you lemon water or herbal tea after your session, just ask.
Repeat — if the session served your needs, be proactive and reschedule before you leave, or reach out when you feel the need for your next session.
Stay Active — especially if your issues have been caused by underuse, make it a goal to maintain the progress we made in the session by enjoying your full range of motion daily. What are the ways you love to use your body?
Relax — especially if you find yourself constantly tightening certain areas of your body more than necessary. First notice where the tension is. Notice what types of settings or situations heighten those instinctive holding patterns. See if you can let go a little bit. Incorporate this simple practice, noticing and letting go, into any moment of your day, while you’re sitting, walking, driving, laying down to sleep…
This can be a very fruitful, long-term practice if you commit to it. It will reward you with increasing ease and fluid movement, awareness and safety, intimacy and delight — all within your own body.
How do you pronounce ianua?
“Ee-ah-nu-ah” or “Yah-nu-ah” — what does it mean? See the about page.
Will you come to my house for a session?
Yes — text or email me directly. I’ll be in touch so we can calculate a traveling fee, address any other questions you have, and get your appointment on the calendar. Bonus if you have a partner, housemate, family member or neighbor who would also like a session.
I am also happy to discuss bringing massage or reflexology to a gathering, party or community event that you’re organizing. Let’s collaborate!
Can I buy a gift card?
Absolutely — I’d be honored to work with those dear to you! You can pick one up at your session, or let me know the recipients name and address, and I can mail one to them directly.
